Ian Gillan... was born on 19th August 1945 in Hounslow, Middlesex, Great Britain, where he also joined his first semi-pro group, the Moonshiners. He sang in various constellations and appeared under a variety of different pseydonyms during the early years, eg. Garth Rockett, Jess Thunder, Jess Gillan, and probably others as well.

September to October 1962 The Moonshiners

October 1962 to March 1964 The Javelins

People involved Gordon Fairminer (gtr); Jess Gillan [= Ian Gillan] (vcl); Keith Roach (drm); Tony Tacon (gtr); Tony Whitfield (bss); plus John Kerrison (drm) occasionally. The Javelin's apparently had a lousy singer. When they heard Gillan (who sang together with a bunch of lousy musicians), they didn't think twice when ditching the old singer for Gillan. They toured a lot but didn't record; that is, not until 1994 [see further below].

March 1964 The Hickies
People involved Ian Gillan [or something!] (vcl); and some others. A jazz-blues group that did a few gigs to fulfill the Javelins' tour-contract, according to Pete Frame's trees anyway. However, according to the sleeve notes to the Javelins' 1994 recording, Gillan was recruited directly to Wainwright's Gentlemen from the Javelins.

September 1969 Concerto For Group And Orchestra

People involved Ritchie Blackmore (gtr); Ian Gillan (vcl); Roger Glover (bss); Jon Lord (org/pno/kbr); Ian Paice (drm); and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Malcolm Arnold. Lord's Concerto was performed live at the Royal Albert Hall on 24 September 1969, by Deep Purple (with two brand new members, Gillan and Glover) and the RPO conducted by Malcolm Arnold. The event was televized (in the UK and Denmark), recorded and released on both album and video (slightly edited). It gave Deep Purple a huge marketing. October 1970 Jesus Christ Superstar

October 1975 The Butterfly Ball [live]

Glover's Butterfly Ball was performed live at the Royal Albert Hall together with loads of guests, incl. Ian Gillan who thus did his first live performance since leaving Deep Purple. "He made his appearance wearing short hair and later said the experience brought him back into business. June to August 1978 Gillan

The I.G.B. project didn't seem to work so Gillan and Towns started working on another idea, which eventually evolved into Gillan (the group). This first proto-version did one gig at the Reading festival. This line-up also recorded the version of "Fighting Man" that appear on the European version of the album Mr Universe. A session-ish thing done to fullfil Gillan's contract with Virgin. A fresh and absolutely superb initiative, which filled one of the gaps between Blackmore's inspirational blurts! The track "Lonely Avenue" appeared on the soundtrack to Rain Man (featuring Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise). A name was later chosen for this outfit: Repo Depot. They even recorded some tracks - or at least they wrote some - before Gillan re-joined the purple band.

August 1992 to November 1993 Deep Purple Mk II.c

People involved Ritchie Blackmore (gtr); Ian Gillan (vcl); Roger Glover (bss); Jon Lord (kbr); Ian Paice (drm). Gillan is asked to re-join Deep Purple and the classic line-up is reborn again. They record The Battle Rages On... (1993) and go touring. However, frictions within the band continue to amass until Blackmore decides to leave in the middle of the tour. He sang a duet with Rakintzhs called "Getaway". He also sang lead on "My Heart Remains The Same" and "I Think I Know". Gillan joined Rakintzhs for three gigs in Greece during August 1993. Things went so well that a longer European tour was quickly organized from May to July 1994. However, no recordings have officially been released.

September 1999 Jon Lord's Concerto

Lord's Concerto was performed live at the Royal Albert Hall on 25th and 26th September 1999 - 30 years after it's premiere performance. The main performers were the London Philharmonics together with Deep Purple Mk VII. In addition, there were lots of guest appearances by a variety of rock celebrities. August to September 2001 Deep Purple Mk pre-VIII
People involved Don Airey (kbr); Ian Gillan (vcl); Roger Glover (bss); Steve Morse (gtr); Ian Paice (drm). Jon Lord hurt his knee, had to sit/lie through some surgery, and thus couldn't finish an ongoing tour. Don Airey was asked to fill in for him, in what everybody thought was a temporary replacement job. Oooh, were we fooled!

March 2002 onwards Deep Purple Mk VIII
People involved Don Airey (kbr); Ian Gillan (vcl); Roger Glover (bss); Steve Morse (gtr); Ian Paice (drm). After 30+ years, Jon Lord decides to retire from the purple ranks.
