Deep Purple - press review about Essen
13 March 1996
HEADLINE: FIVE ROCKSTARS HAD THE BLUES
Five not even the youngest men "blow 5000 fans wind out of bones" the band
Deep Purple created an extraordinary atmosphere in Grugahalle.
A stage without any 'show theatre ' , stars concentrated on the main thing:
Rock n' Roll. Ian Gillan - loud voiced for what he is well known - had best
temper and fitness. Roger Glover played a bass frequence "down in the
stomach" fat grooved with lot of fun. Jon Lord's organ sounded asa always
and will sound in a hundred years. Ian
Paice did a powerful and very
exactly drummimg . Steve Morse often copied Blackmnore , but he
(Morse) always found back to his own play. imaginative and sensible , he
seemed to be very integrated and actually he is more than even a Blackmore
replacement. The boys played a mixture of old hits to sing with the crowd
and some not even popular masterpieces. The new songs didn't reach quality
of the old highlights, but that had no influence on the audience good
temper . Only one ballad , all the somgs were played very powerful and
without any compromise
Deep Purple gets the greatest compliment for that evening, which can be
made for Rock'n roll:
They had the Blues !
Well, that was a local daily press review, which is indeed a very good
one !
( a bit difficult to translate because of metaphors ...)
