Deep Purple - Deep Purple - Essen, Grugahalle, Denmark
Thursday 14 March 1996
I ARRIVED WITH a friend of mine who is not the biggest Deep Purple fan at
10 past eight at the legendary Grugahalle, for me it was third time to see them
in Essen Grugahlle (the shows before with Joe L. Turner and the MKII one, which
were pretty good ... but that's history ...)
we travelled by train from Dortmund to Essen drinking a few tuborg beer ...
and came to the entrance of Grugahalle: NO CONTROL AT ALL !!! , ticket check, so
we went in, looked around in "foyer" for a few minutes and then walked to stage
to have a look for Pan Ram.
We forgot to buy some beer, so we left after 2 songs and went back to "foyer".
it was about half past eight and everybody thought Deep Purple would start the show
EXACTLY !!! at nine o'clock ...
so we had time look on merchandise things. there were T-shirts offered between
20,- DM and 80,- which is a bit to much for that bad quality almost !
Caps , poster, stickers and the thing i prefered was a kind of booklet (bigger than
DIN A 4 ) showing some fine photos from Purpendicular studio sessions with a diary
of that period all for 15,-DM, which is great, because CD-booklet is a bit bad
(less information) and this yearbook is a bit like the original Machine head,
fireball vinyl cover photos ... so buy it !!! also available for 10,- in size of
postcard ...
ten minutes to nine we went in 10 meters next to stage , where roger would play his
powerful !!! bass ... but there was some music by metallica from CD-PLAYER ...
it became nine o'clock NOTHING HAPPENED !!!
it became five past nine AGAIN !!! NOTHING HAPPENED !!!
it became TEN PAST nine AGAIN !!! NOTHING HAPPENED !!!
it became FIFTEEN MINUTES PAST NINE : NOTHING HAPPENED !!!
CROWD STARTED SHOUTING !!!
What went wrong ? - NOTHING !!!
17 minutes past nine a HURRICANE went through my ears !!!
S T A G E L I G H T ! ! !
