From: av35@dial.pipex.com (Steve Lamb) Date: Sun, 18 Feb 1996 18:23:07 GMT Subject: Reading Review 17/2 I was at the Reading gig on Feb 17th - I'll post my comments in several parts as I get time. (All parts are in this single report - Ed.) Summary: Best Purple gig I've ever seen!!:-))))) Gig lasted 2 hours 15 mins! Support are pretty good straight down the middle Heavy Metal but far too loud and ordinary for olduns like me (I stayed in the bar!) Set List (I'm pretty sure I've got the tracks right but I've forgotten the order after the first few numbers!) Perhaps Howard & Geoffrey can help me out on the order :-).
ENCORE
The band have a different layout: Steve Morse on the left, Jon facing the audience at the back just left of Centre, Big Ian everywhere, tom toms towards the back just to the right of Jon, Paicey towards the right and Roger in Front of him on the right. Sound quality was fantastic, generally the best mix I've heard at any gig for some time. Steve's guitar very clean and clear without being too loud, Jon's organ very clear and it was easy to make out every word from Big Ian. Bass and drums clear and not distorting. New IG quote for the record after some problems in between tracks: "We're turning professional next week!" Novelty: the guitar keeps playing when the spotlight is on one of the other band members!! Band clearly enjoying it all and working very hard. The new tracks stand out as being more rhythmically interesting. There were handout post cards at the gig with a reply coupon to register your interest in DP with BMG. (I also found a BMG Interact Postcard in my copy of _|_) The programme is a 1995 yearbook and includes a picture of a WWW browser pointed at the DP Home Page. RG's studio reports are recorded and there is lots of info on the writing of the tracks on _|_. I'd be happy to post the text IF Roger or Jon or Bruce post here or e-mail me to say it's OK. The WWW URL is also given on the postcard (but with all the//// as \\\\!!) The year book was GBP 6. Not bad for such a good production - loads of pictures as well as the "diary". Well worth shelling out. I didn't get a good look at the other merchandise but saw from a distance that there were black T shirts with the broken match and "purpendicular" from the CD cover.
