Deep Purple - Aberdeen Capitol
Thursday, 1st March 1996- Newspaper Review
WHAT PAPER WAS THAT review in ?
I was at that gig and I couldn't believe how good it was.
A few years ago I saw DP at Edinburgh with TMIB and thought they were
brilliant even though Joe Lynn Turner was doing vocals.
I didn't know what to expect with Gillan - and wasn't particularly
expecting much at Aberdeen knowing Ritchie was out - but I was hugely
impressed with Gillan's performance and Steve Morse was outstanding.
Somehow you can't help taking it for granted that Lord, Paice and Glover
always deliver the goods.
As well as the individual performances, the crowd
were just blown away with the set - it was great to hear stuff like No One
Came and Maybe I'm a Leo and Fireball. And Morse and Lord really pulled off
a kick-ass Speed King. Gillan really was an amazing hit with the crowd -
they just loved him - he really does look a star on stage.
I almost didn't
bother going to the concert but decided at the last minute to scramble for
tickets - I'm glad I didn't miss it. The other thing that surprised me was
the crowd - there was the usual headbanger brigade (someone shouted "what
about Ace of Spades ?"), the usual drunk mob, a lot of bald heads who who
probably bought In Rock when it was released in 1970, but there were also a
lot of wives, girlfriends and younger kids and you could see everyone just
loved it.
