Deep Purple's show in Jakarta on April 12th 2004 [Their fourth Jakarta show after one in April 2002 and two in 1975. Rasmus], was a clear sign how a band that has achieved legend status is supposed to be. Ian Gillan, Ian Paice, Roger Glover, Steve Morse, and Don Airey prooved that the older they are the higher energy and charisma they delivered to the fans through their classic songs and the new ones from the latest album Bananas.
The show itself kicked off at 8.30pm with the new tune Silver Tongue. The crowd went crazy when the second song, a classic track from their Who Do We Think We Are album Woman From Tokyo blasted from Steve Morse's guitar.
I Got Your Number, Strange Kind Of Woman, Bananas and Knocking At Your Back Door followed before Morse showed to the audience the reason why he is entitled to be one of the best guitarists in the world. He mesmerized the crowd with his perfect guitar solo through Contact Lost and Well Dressed Guitar (too bad that this full of spirit song didn't make it onto the Bananas album).
Airey followed Morse by showing his classically trained skills on the keyboards. His solo included parts of classical songs and Indonesia Raya (the Indonesian national anthem). Unfortunately, Airey didn't show much of Hammond's sound of blues, we missed Lord...
The intro to Perfect Strangers reminded the crowd that there was still more to go with Deep Purple that night. After finishing this song, they continued with another powerful energetic song, Highway Star. What else to say, the best racing car song ever written by human beings.
Doing It Tonight, Lazy, and Haunted (what a beautiful ballad and guitar solo) were the songs that Ian sang before the band came back to their heyday in 1972 with songs like Space Truckin' (with small Paicey solo) and of course, that Montreux song, Smoke On The Water.
Finally they gave a bonus to the audience, Black Night as the final anthem.
What a lovely evening to spend with one of the classic rock legend group, Deep Purple.
I thaaank yoooou, hope to have them back to Jakarta very soon.

The title cut from the new album. This perhaps displays the skills of the entire band better than any other track. Performed live it did so even more. Here Ian Gillan is at the top of his game both vocally and lyrically, spinning wittily mischievous Shakespearean puns.

I just got back from Bali yesterday, I took four days off work just for DP... Yes, DP only!
Finally, DP returned to my hometown. This was my third opportunity to see them live. The first one was on Dec 4th, 1975 - Come Taste The Band Tour - in a big soccer stadium filled with around 40,000 people (I missed Dec 5th, 75 show). Yes, that was the first time we had the chance to see a hard rock supergroup gig, the days when DP was very popular worldwide. The second time was 27 years later! .. in April two years ago, when they performed in an arena with 4,000 people capacity which was sold out.
The third was At Senayan Tennis Indoor Hall with about 4,000 people. I was a little disappointed, the hall was only about 3/4th filled. I guess due to not enough advertisement.
The press conference was held at the Hilton hotel, Sunday evening April 10th. I came with my daughter and sat in the first row.
The whole band showed up, and the reporters asked many questions such as:what they feel about doing touring in many different countries, what's the story behind the last album title Bananas. I also took this opportunity asking them if there'll be any plan to videotaping their show in Bali, which would be held in a very exotic place. But no.
Unfortunately, there was no photo session together with them.
Anyway, the concert itself as reviewed by Ferdinand Utama, was really amazing, the sound was so clear and loud from my position in the first row balcony which was directly above the sound mixer. I could hear the sound of every instrument crystal clear.
I couldn’t believe it, they’re approaching 60 years of age but still kicking. They played energetically as if it was their last concert. The crowd on the ground floor (festival class ) kept standing for the whole show, clapping hands, and jumping especially when DP delivered old tunes.
The set list wasn’t as long as at the other shows in Japan, Korea, China, and S’pore. They dropped four songs (too bad) - When A Blind Man Cries, House Of Pain, Hush, and Pictures Of Home (I really missed this one - very disappointing !), but they played another track from the Bananas album which wasn't played in the others places during the Asian tour; Haunted. The encore was only one song, Black Night (oohhh too bad, what’s goin on with you Deep Purple?).
Outside the hall after the show, I saw so many people rush to buy DP t-shirts. I was lucky I'd already bought mine before the show.
Thanks a lot Deep Purple, any chance to see you again on stage? Pleaseeee come back.
