HOUSE OF BLUES / Los Angeles
Outside of the fact the boys got to lay their weary heads down for a luxurious four-night stay in LaLa Land, they missed Sunday's nasty rain storm. When things are going right, they are going right! Saturday's closing show was even better than the opening show four nights before (see my review 1/28). So not to be redundant, I will skip the formalities and playlist, since the only difference was "Rosa's Cantina" (and it kicks live!!) If possible, Ian Gillan's voice was in even better fettle Saturday night. He was relaxed and led the band with stupendous energy and goodwill. Roger's bass playing, now under Ampeg steam, shot through the mix with voracious power. Ian Paice anchored songs such as "No One Came" and "Fireball" as only he can, while Jon and Steve were a bit more playful during their many call/response runs. In all, a beautifully realized show ending what had to be a pleasant stop for the band. The Hollywood Reporter trade paper review was a rave (I'll post it later) and it echoes what was obvious to anyone attending: this band kicks ass and the future is as bright as ever. Many thanks to Roger for his graciousness and hospitality...I can't wait for the band to return...as well as release "Abandon". In the meantime, my mind is reeling in "7th Heaven" as I replay those nights over and over. Five virtuosos...four nights...one hell of a great time!!
