Review: Sommerarena Vienna, July 5
I flew into Vienna a day early on a business trip to see the show.
A very good warm up with Morrison and Rage. The Doors revival provided by Morrison was striking, even though the crowd was a bit stand-offish. As the rain reached its peak, Riders on the Storm was nice. Rage is a good band and received a good response from the crowd.
Deep Purple is simply the best hard rock band in the world. There may be good nights and bad nights on a world tour, but they can't get any better than this night.
>From the moment Paice and Glover began their pounding intro to Hush, I could tell it was going to be a great performance. I have never seen them happier or healthier. There was great feeling of having a lot of fun across the stage. The band is so tight and articulate. Ian's voice is as strong and pure as 25 years ago, and he was great with the harp. Jon is such a virtuoso, words can't describe. Steve is amazing, makes it all look so easy. Paice was very precise, as usual, and the kit sounded great. Roger was spot on and sounded fantastic all night, he is so much fun to watch. At times I couldn't decide who to watch, because they are each masters in their art and craft. The new songs were great, 7 of them, well done boys, and the old songs were a clinic in musicianship. Deep Purple just keeps getting better and better.
I am now looking forward to the Pine Knob concert in the USA.
