[ d e e p P u r . p l e ) The Highway Star

Review Erfurt, 10/10/1998

I just returned from the concert in Erfurt and wanted to share my impressions with you.

Since I arrived late I couldn't get close to the stage, but had nonetheless a good view to the stage.

Support act was a band from Switzerland which called themselves "Florian Ast und der Florianstein", they played for a little more than half an hour.

Purple started around 21:00, the concert lasted about 110 minutes.

From my positon the mix was IMHO OK, this time a little bit low on the guitar.

The lightshow was the same, with the /-\ background put to good use.

The clothes
Sorry, didn't pay attention to that, but nothing out of the ordinary.

The stage-setup (view from the audience)
Ian Paice:left background
Jon Lord:right background
the congas middle background
Steve Morse right foreground
Roger Glover left foreground
Ian Gillan theoretical in the middle foreground, in fact the whole stage

The setlist

Speed king (drum solo included, Steve played part of an instrumental, could have been from "The Shadows", but I'm not sure and Gillan threw in a verse of something I don't know, anyone??)

Encores
Seventh Heaven
Highway Star

So much for what happened, now to the more subjective part:

Let's start with my impressions on the individual performances, I will keep this short, this time everyone was in really good form.

It was again a good show, with long and inspired solos by everyone and a amazing Gillan on vocals.

Since this probably was my last show for this tour, I want to thank everyone I met before, during and after the shows, it is has been a pleasure to meet you.

And of course not to forget the best rockband in the world: Ian, Roger, Jon, Steve and Ian.

I thaannnk you. IIII ttthhhaannnnnkkkkk yyyoooouuuuu.

Keep on rockin'.

Christian Rutz
