Deep Purple Olympia, São Paulo , Brazil
March 18th, 19th and 20th, 1997
After long six years Deep Purple return to Brazil to present us with the
Purpendicular tour, in this time featuring Ian Gillan in his first time
here with the band (he was here two times alone in 1990 and 1992) and
Steve Morse a great guitarist who gave a new motivation for the old
members making the better album after "Perfect Strangers"(since 1984 of
course). I went in this three shows and i really don't have sufficient
adjectives to define what is a Deep Purple concert, it's wonderful,
beautiful, magis and many more...
The set list more or less in order:
- Hush
- Fireball
- Vavoom: Ted The mechanic
- Black Night
- Pictures of Home
- Cascades: I'm Not Your Lover
- Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming
- Woman From Tokyo
- Rosa's Cantina
- No One Came
- Smoke On The Water
- When A Blind Man Cries
- Speed King
Encores
- Perfect Strangers
- Highway Star
Notes
Jon Lord like always is a showman with his fantastis technique, in the
first show he played a little piece of an old Brazilian song called
"Aquarela do Brasil"; Steve Morse is really very good, in his solo he
played riffs of various songs, in the first Show Jimi Hendrix (I don't
remember the song's name); in the second "Back in Black"(AC/DC) and a
latin song called "macarena"; in the third "Whola Lotta Love"(Led
Zeppelin) and a song for the old band Free, he did a workshop in a
conservatory called "Souza Lima" on thursday afternoon; Ian Paice was
correct, showing his good form, his solo is terrific; Roger Glover was
perfect his best moments were "pictures of Home"and No One Came"; Ian
Gillan showed for everybody he still is the one of the best rock
singers of the history (in my opinion he's the best) fifty-one
years old singing better than many younger singers, simply unbelievable.
During "Perfect Strangers" two Brazilian girls was dancing a mix of
dance and fight called "capoeira". I was in the hotel where the band
were ("Maksoud Plaza") and i took autographs from all members and i took
pictures side-by-side with all and the tour manager Colin Hart, it was
a dream for me. The Brazilian fans didn't miss Ritchie Blackmore(i went
in two shows of Rainbow last year at the same Olympia and was very good)
but the band without him is excellent. I hoped for two song "Hey
Cisco" and "The Aviator" what a pity they didn't play in this shows. My
English is limited but my apreciation for Deep Purple is not!!!
Thanks for coming and please comeback soon!!!!
God bless you all
Albertino Viveiros (Neco)
