I had the good fortune of seeing DP live at the Beacon (NYC) last night.
In a nutshell, here are my thoughts: The band was very good, but the
sound system was awful. Actually, I think the problem is that DP's
customary decibel level was not properly handled by the small venue. The
result: A distorted overall sound, and Ian's voice/screaming barely
audible. (In fact, from the 11th row, I couldn't even hear what Ian was
saying when he was talking to the audience)
In any event, I tried to imagine the concert with a better sound system:
I concluded that Ian can still sing, little Ian can certainly still hit
those skins, and Roger and Jon remain true musical maestros. Steve Morse
was solid, though it is obvious that he lacks the stage presence of
Ritchie Blackmore.
In any event, it was great to see the band. Now, some highlights:
- Gillan vocally emulating Steve's guitar licks during Speed King.
- Jon's keyboard solo during Smoke, breaking into New York, New York.
- A particularly moving When a Blind Man Cries, both by Ian and Steve.
- Solid Paicey, throughout the night.
Enjoy!
