I just got home from the Chicago show. I have
good news and bad news.
Let us start with the bad news. The audience was
extremely passive. Allow me to exemplify: The couple
behind me started complaining about the fact that
I was standing up, while everybody else is seated.
They both kept nagging me and nagging me about it.
Finally they gave up. Five minutes later, I sat down.
I believe that at a rock concert one should be able
to stand up and try to sing along as long as there is
no pushing or shoving involved. This is not a high
school recital.
The more pathetic part, in my opinion was that there
were more people standing up during Woman from Tokyo
than during Speed King.
Now to the good news: The performance was great. It was
a good mix of songs. I was also impressed by Steve Morse.
He felt comfortable playing with the band and there seemed
to be good chemistry between him, Glover and Gillan.
Unfortunately, I was unable to see Lord from where I was
sitting. I loved his solo.
It appeared that Gillan is no longer able to scream the
way he did on Child in time and Born Again (Sabbath). I
think however that despite this, he did a great job
singing. I was kind of glad that they skipped Child in Time.
I like to remember it the way it was done on DP in Japan
and Live and Rare.
I give the band an A and the quite audience an F.
The openening act was MArtial Law, a local Chicago band.
I was not impressed by their music. I am not saying it was
bad, since I do not like that style of music. It could be
worse (e.g. Fear Factory for Iron Maiden)
Kouros.
