Subject: DP Umea June 28

This will not be a true review of the show DP played in Umea on June 28th. Nevertheless, I will share a few things I saw and thoughts that came to mind.

It was an outdoor show played at the grass of a football ground (Gimoborg) and the weather was fine. The sun was shining from an almost clear blue sky. Three lousy grungy bands opened but they only played an hour in total. I have seen the set-list from the Karlshamn gig that DP played a couple of weeks ago and this night they played pretty much the same set. I don't remember the exact order, but the encores were Perfect Strangers and Highway Star.

It was the first time I personally have seen DP live in concert and although I am not really a fanatic I really loved the show. Since they play so many new songs I think they tell everyone they are a band that still progresses and not like many old 70s bands who are almost like cover bands playing only 20-25 years old songs. I have seen other saying it before and I agree that the feeling you get when you see them is that Steve Morse is the star. He is incredible! Ian Gillan seemed to have fun referring to Italy all the time, talking about Italian ice-cream etc, don't ask me why. He imitated Pavarotti b/W a couple of songs and he gaves us he usual (as I have seen in videos) dance where he sort stands on one legs and sort of surfs across the stage! :) amdp regular basec5 switched bass several times during the show (the Rickenbacker is the coolest looking Roger!:)) and he laughed a lot when Ian Gillan announced that Cascades (IANYL) is "A song about the opening of the Queen's legs". I was utterly impressed by "ol' grumpy" as well!! ;) When he played that hammond smoke almost came out of his ears. He was actually vibrating at times!! :) And those interplays with Steve Morse!! Incredible! Paice had obviously loaned one of Roger's bandanas and he was also impressive. I saw him twice in the 80s with Gary Moore (83&84) but even if it's hard to believe he seems to have improved his drumming since those days. He also seemed to have a lot of fun.

Fun, was also something that the audience had. The average age was probably around 40. I stood just in front of the sound engineer and when I looked around I saw at least 50 guys around me that had almost no hair left, and they were all going nuts!!! Straaange feeling!! ;)

I left the arena with a warm feeling (no, I had not wet my pants) and it also feels good to know that I wil see them again on Tuesday in Uppsala.
