Deep Purple - Ulm, Donauhalle, Deutschland

Monday, 12 March 1996

HI FOLKS!

Yesterday (12/3/96) was Purple Day - at least here in Ulm, which lies somewhere in the south of Germany. To me yesterday was a very special day... not only, because I finally found one of the Professors I was chasing after for about two weeks, not only because I got a love-letter from a long lost (but very dear) friend, not only because I met up with five Gentlemen, each one of whom could easily be my father by age... but because I saw DEEP PURPLE live on stage. Yes, I mean DEEP PURPLE! Well, I have been on other concerts of the band since their reunion in 1984, but never before I saw the real DP.

I mean, what I saw was a group of individuals who seemed to have accidently met on stage... But yesterday it was a real band playing together. A great experience for me. To be honest: I am glad that RB left the band for good, cos I was pissed off by seeing a bored RB who could drop his guitar and be gone any minute. Now, there were these five gentlemen... Steve Morse fits very well in the band. And even when there are a few who are missing Ritchie, they should be fair and give him a chance.

He did a very good job yesterday in Ulm. I have seen a set list in another article in this newsgroup, so I think there is no need for repetitions.

It was the first gig of the German tour and a pretty good start, I think. The most positive aspects were "Fireball" - the opening number, "Speed King" with a nice Lord/Morse duelling, "Pictures of Home" and "Sometimes I feel like Screaming". Although Jon & Steve were a bit ill and not feeling too well and although IG wasn't in the best mood right before the gig - nevertheless they all did a great job. Roger was at his best, also Paicey was in excellent form, although it was a shame that he didn't play any solo. Jon also was not featured heavily, but at least there were a few very nice hammond intros/solos... IG seemed to have left his bad mood outside the concert hall and Steve convinced with some brilliant guitar work. Well, a few negative points are also to be mentioned :

IG was pretty hard to hear sometimes (and he had to look up the lyrics now and then); I would have loved to hear a bit more of Jon; and finally that they played for "only" 2h 10mins. It was a shame that they didn't play "Rat Bat Blue" nor "Mary Long"... Anyway, all in all it was a good start of the German tour and it was wonderful to see DP as a band! And they had a warm welcome, by the way. I hope they will keep the positive spirit...

Cheers,

Ingo.

P.S. To Rog: THANK YOU!!!
