A few weeks ago I received from Bruce Payne, the manager, a semi-invitation to meet Deep Purple backstage. No sign of Bruce Payne that night. No guestlist with my name on it etc. The security told me to wait right there because the band would arrive within 15 minutes. And so they did. There I was shaking hands - for the first time in 26 years - with Roger, Jon and Steve. It happend so quickly I missed Ian G.. Ian P. was already inside.

The gig started 9:15 pm. Jon Lord was steaming up his organ, Ian Paice was great as ever, Roger Glover steady as a rock, Ian Gillan just splendid and Steve Morse is no longer the replacement of Blackmore, but definitive a full member of Deep Purple. Highlights of the show (for me) are Pictures of home, Sometimes I feel Like Screaming, When A Blind Man Cries and Speed King (interluding Not Fade Away and Mexico....does anybody remember Les Humphries).

Just after Perfect Stranger I left the hall to try to get a change to meet them again. A few minutes after twelve o'clock Ian Paice came out the door. He was extremly friendly, had a chat with him while taking pictures etc. After Ian P. came Ian Gillan. He said he was very tired, but nevertheless he talked with us, had the time for pictures etc. Steve Morse - and his son Kevin - was next. What a guy. He is so the opposit of Blackmore. Polite and friendly to all of us. We spoke about how happy he was with Purple and beeing completly accepted by the band and the fans. He emphasized to me that if such was not the case he would stop and go on with his own projects. Shortly after Steve, Roger and Jon came out the door; two friendly gentlemen. Both very kind, taking all the time of the world answering questions, signing tourbooks etc. When the tourbus was gone, a few very happy fans stayed behind with big smiles on their face's. We all agreed upon; this was an experience we will never forget.

Johan Antonides, Holland
