Well, this was one seriously fine show!
This is the fourth time I've seen them, all with Steve. The first time was on the '98 Abandon tour, then two co-headlining shows, the first with Skynyrd, then with the Scorpions, and now another headlining show. Except for the '98 show, this was the best show I've seen from them (but the other shows didn't suck).
The band was hot tonight, they were more animated, moving, interacting, and yes there was some jamming and improvision going on, they were just having fun and letting loose. I was nervous going in, didn't know what we'd get, but what we got was awesome. They've still got it.
As for the other bands, well, I only know two songs from Thin Lizzy and they did them both. Otherwise, they were OK. Much more 'metal' than I remember Lizzy sounding (the Sykes influence), but they were OK.
Satriani, on the other hand, bored me to tears. Yes, the guy is an awesome player, he looks like he's enjoying himself, but I can only take so much of it. Truthfully, I would have rather had Lizzy and Satch switched time slots.
Overall, great show. I'm glad they did the Bananas material, and I wouldn't mind more Morse material, but I'll tell you what, what the crowd wants is the classic stuff. Looking around at the crowd, I'll bet most of them have never heard anything after Perfect Strangers. And when the band did Highway Star, Space Truckin' and Smoke in a row, the place was roaring! We here may complain, but they are giving the crowd what they want to hear.

What a night for music.
The show started with a blazing hot set from Thin Lizzy. Sykes and Gorham were outstanding in their dual led guitar rolls. Mike Lee is one of the best drummers I have ever heard. I only wish the set was longer and Satriani's a bit shorter... These guys should headline soon, don't miss them on this tour.
Joe Satriani was next, a truly amazing guitarist. He plays an eight-string guitar like it was child's play. He was backed by some talented musicians. The only problem I had with Satch was the set seemed a bit long and got boring. But good overall.
Next up was Deep Purple. I have seen Purple 40 plus times beginning in 1971. I have seen all the line-ups since then and this one is as good if not better than all the others.
It amazed me to see how youthful and playful Big Ian, Little Ian and Roger are after all these years. Roger and Little Ian still lay down a mean line. Big Ian is a good of a front man as there is ever in rock. His voice is as good now if not better than it was in '71. Don Airey has stepped nicely into Jon Lord's place. He is also a master of the keyboards with his amazing solos. Steve Morse is outstanding - I really loved Well Dressed Guitar - his work is fantastic. I really like the fact that he puts his own touch on the classics.
This was one hot night in both weather and on the stage. The packed house was on their feet from the first note of Thin Lizzy to the last note of Deep Purple. Don't be late or miss this tour shows.
