Preface: I struggled very hard to find out if I should ever go to a DP concert at all. I still don't regret that I left out the 2002 tour completely and Saarbrücken in June 2003 did not at all convince me...
After seeing Funeral for a Friend and Iron Maiden on Tuesday it was clear to me that the opener could only be better and the headliner could only be worse.
Well, now it's Wednesday and Molly Hatchet enter the stage. Me, as well as a lot of others, feel a little strange that the Bananas decoration left and right of the stage is already displayed in full light. Paicey's drumkit is hidden under a British flag. My conclusion during the second song: at least this band "grooves" (contrary to what "Funeral for a Friend" did) and the voice of the singer pleases me more (what does this tell us about the voice of the little boy the night before?). Apart from that I remembered a short review of the Munich show I'd seen: "Much too loud!"
After the announcement to the third song I was thru with that band: I am pretty allergic to that pathetic bullshit certain Americans use to mourne their current prisoners of war and "missed in action"s (by the way: he did not mention the "lost in action"s!).
Well, OK, conclusion after the encore (a little more than an hour): I did not feel physically unwell - but there was no comparison to the party feeling in June with Lynyrd Skynyrd!
Change over: I am fighting my way to the toilet (that alone is not really easy if you are sitting on the balcony on the site opposite to the entrance in Frankfurter Festhalle) and after that the way downstairs to the stage. Lucky me was in possession of two tickets and therefor was able to change between seating and standing audience.
Deep Purple start to play and to my big relief it was clear very soon that the sound as well as Gillan's voice are far better than what I experienced with this band ever since the Concerto tour. During the show and afterwarsd I talked to several fans that agreed with me here - I really hope that Frankfurt was not the only show to which this applied!.
After another change back to a higher viewpoint, looking over the audience, I dare to claim that most fans were in a better mood than they had been on the tour in June. Party, dancing, headbanging, singing along (the new songs as loud as the old ones!), like I hadn't seen at a DP concert for a while.
The setlist was the same like the previous shows but not even I minded about that! I didn't realize anything 'typically Frankfurt' in Don's solo (as he did include local songs in other cities).The only cover song with vocals of that night that I recognized in the medley between Hush and Black Night was "Hit the Road Jack".
Let's see when I will go to the next DP show - for now DP won me back as a fan.
I can't give a final conclusion as to whether Iron Maiden or Deep Purple were better. A verdict worthy of Salomon: Maiden's show is better (almost every song has its own backdrop, the singer keeps changing clothes and Eddie's there...) - but Purple's music is more versatile.

Vorwort: die meisten von Euch wissen, wie sehr ich mit mir gekämpft habe, ob ich überhaupt noch mal zu einem DP Konzert gehe - dass ich 2002 komplett habe ausfallen lassen, habe ich bis heute nicht bereut, und Saarbrücken im Juni 2003 hat mich alles andere als begeistert...
Nach "Funeral for a Friend" und "Iron Maiden" am Dienstag stand für mich fest: die Vorband kann nur besser werden, die Hauptband nur schlechter.
Nun ja, es ist Mittwoch, Molly Hatchet kommen auf die Bühne. Auch mir ist zuerst aufgefallen, dass die Bananas Dekos schon angeleuchtet sind, und dass Paiceys Drumkit unter der Britischen Flagge steckt (ich saß während MH noch oben im Rang, links von der Bühne, von dort war klar zu erkennen, was das war;-). Feststellung während des zweiten Songs: na ja, immerhin "groovt" die Band (im Gegensatz zu "Funeral for a Friend") und die Stimme des Sängers gefällt mir auch besser (was sagt uns das über die Stimme des Jüngelchen vom Tag zuvor?!?;-) Außerdem erinnerte ich mich an ein Kurzreview von München: "Viel zu laut!" Nach der Ansage zum dritten Song hatten die Herren bei mir eindeutig verschissen: ich bin äußerst allergisch gegen diesen pathetischen Dünnsinn, mit dem die Amis ihre aktuellen Kriegsgefangenen und Verschollenen (nebenbei: die Gefallenen hat er nicht erwähnt!) bedauern.
Na ja, Fazit nach der Zugabe (gut 1 Stunde): körperlich schlecht geworden (wie am Dienstag) ist mir nicht - aber kein Vergleich zu der Partystimmung vom Juni mit Lynyrd Skynyrd!
Umbaupause: ich erkämpfe mir den Weg zum Klo (schon dass ist in der Frankfurter Festhalle nicht einfach, wenn man oben, auf der dem Eingang abgewandten Seite, sitzt) und dann den Weg runter zur Bühne. Netterweise hatte ich ja beide Eintrittskarten und konnte so zwischen Stehplatz unten und Sitzplatz oben wechseln;-)
DP fangen an zu spielen und es stand zu meiner großen Freude schnell fest, dass sowohl der Sound als auch Gillans Stimme wesentlich besser sind, als das, was ich seit dem Concerto von DP persönlich erlebt habe. Im Laufe und nach der Show habe ich mit etlichen anderen Fans gesprochen, die mir darin recht gegeben haben - ich hoffe mal, dass Frankfurt nicht die einzige Show war, auf die das zutrifft!;-)
Nach einem weiteren Standortwechsel wieder nach oben, mit Blick auf das Publikum, wage ich mal die These, dass auch bei fast allen anderen Fans die Stimmung deutlich besser war, als während der Juni-Tour. Party, Tanzen, Bangen, Mitsingen (auch bei den neuen Songs!), wie ich es bei DP lange nicht mehr erlebt habe.
Die Setlist war die selbe, wie bei den vorherigen Shows, aber das hat nicht einmal mich gestört! In Dons Solo habe ich nichts "Frankfurt-typisches" entdeckt - aber ob das daran liegt, dass ich selbst nur als Tourist da war, oder ob Don nichts gefunden hat, möchte ich hier mal nicht abschließend behaupten. Ich bin für Aufklär-Mails diesbezüglich offen;-) Der einzige Coversong mit Gesang, den ich im Medley zwischen Hush und Black Night klar erkannt habe, war jedenfalls "Hit the Road Jack".
Mal sehen, wann ich das nächste Mal zu einer DP Show gehe - zur Zeit haben mich DP aber als Fan wieder.
Nein, ein Fazit, ob nun Iron Maiden oder Deep Purple besser waren, gibt es nicht. Salomisches Urteil: Maidens Show ist besser (fast jeder Song ein eigenes Backdrop, der Sänger in diversen Verkleidungen und Eddie sowieso...) - aber die Musik von Purple ist vielseitiger;-)
