Roger Glover jamming with Government Mule

I went to see Goverment Mule last night at the Beacon Theatre in New York City. It was kind of weird since we'd never heard the band before - but Roger Glover's website claimed he was jamming with them.

It was a long show. It started not long after 8 and finished not long before 12 with a 20-30 minute break in the middle. It was a cool show, Allman Brothers-style with drawn out jams and touches of classic hard rock - Hendrix, Zep, Sabbath, etc.

We started having doubts that Roger Glover would show up when they were already onto the third bassist of the night about three hours into the show. But he finally appeared and played a couple of songs with them. The first one was Going Down which was pretty funny since Deep Purple Mark 3 and 4 did it for their encores. The second was Maybe I'm A Leo which was very well done, guitarist Warren Haynes wasn't really playing much like Blackmore but they nailed the changes in the song: stop-starts done properly, guitar and keyboards in the right place, and they got the lyrics right too :)

And then Roger was gone. He played for about 10 minutes in a 3-3 1/2 hour set. Fortunately the rest of the show was good, besides a few jams which went on too long with not much direction.

Among other things they also played Zep's Trampled Underfoot, Hendrix's If 6 Was 9 plus a few other snippets here and there. They closed with The Who's Eminence Front and started the encore with a bit of Floyd's Comfortably Numb.
