More next year!!

Negatives first. Got to the Guildhall at 7pm and had to join a long queue to get in. Why not let people in earlier? Inside, two urinals for a balcony full of beer drinking DP fans meant that the whole interval was spent queuing for a pee.

Now positives. Last visit to the Guildhall was in 1995 when I was on stage myself receiving my Open University degree from sir John Daniel (Vice Chancellor). This time the stage was initially occupied by The Planets. Lots of musical talent but no stage presence or confidence. I would recommend a vocalist or front person to lead and motivate the group. Also probably not a good choice to support DP. Nevertheless the good natured crowd gave plenty of encouragement and applause.

Dead on 8.30pm Deep Purple started with a thundering version of Fireball. Lots of power, superb musicianship. Discipline and improvisation. The band appeared to be having a good time with lots of interaction between Ian G and Steve.

Comparisons between Jon and Don is irrelevant. They are both superb keyboardists and I thoroughly enjoyed Don's approach and his solo spot. This band is completely professional and pride themselves on giving the best possible performance every time. The sound system was extremely good with the lights just enough without being garish.

A much improved gig from Bournemouth earlier in the year when Ian G was obviously suffering badly from flu.
