Tearful adieu

Took my 13-year-old son for his initiation to a rock concert. He was quite amused with all the old punters wearing their Deep Purple t-shirts. (especially his dad!)

We watched The Planets and knew exactly what to expect as I saw them in Cardiff earlier in the year. Then Purple came on and they were loud! We were six rows from the front and directly in line with one of the speaker arrays - I swear we could feel the air moving with the power.

A very safe set, nothing different to satisfy the hard-core fans but everything played really well. I especially enjoyed Space Truckin'.

I am sorry to say I am not sure about Don Airey, his style seems so different to our Lord - perhaps he will blend in better when they get some long awaited studio time.

Ian Gillan was on top form apart from having a disagreement with some cameramen. Ace bass work from Roger. Little Ian faultless as always. Steve was stunning.

Must confess to shedding the odd tear when Jon Lord appeared to do Perfect Strangers. All the best for the future Jon.

When we got home my son put Live At The Rotterdam Ahoy on the hi-fi, all enthusiastic after the concert. He said it sounds all right but it's not the same as being there, I quite agree.

Thanks again to the best band in the world.
