An excitement void

After a very funny Dio set (where have the last 15 years gone?), Deep Purple entered the stage to start a 95 minutes set.

This was my 21st Purple concert - and there hardly was another one disappointing me this much! Well, they didn't play particularly bad, but... The point annoying me most: apart from the Well Dressed Guitar, the newest song was six years old. The two next newest songs were 17 years old. The rest was around thirty years old. And I couldn't get rid of the feeling that the band is bored by these old songs by now.

There is no fire any more in today's versions. Don wasn't quite able to fill in the footprints of Jon (well, who would be?), Steve's solos regularly turned into noise, Big Ian reminded me a bit of a tourist having some fun on a stage, Roger was standing in his corner, hardly looking at his band mates - alone Paicey I really enjoyed. I didn't feel any musical tension on stage.

In nearly all of the other concerts I saw of the different line-ups there were surprises, you could feel the fun, they transported vibes - all this was lacking in Heidenheim. So I'm really wondering whether this band still has goals or wether it's turning towards an end...

Guys, start thinking about the new record, develop new ideas, find again the joy in music, the thrill in playing together. With uninspired shows like this you ruin your reputation step by step.
