Wet like Knebworth

We went early to the amphitheater and didn't miss the beginning of Dio,who did a nice performance. They played about one hour.

After half an hour of changing the equipment, Deep Purple started with a brilliant version of Fireball. I kept my eyes and ears on Don Airey and I have to say that he did incredibly well. I knew him from his times with Ozzy and Gary Moore, so I was really interestied in seeing how he would do in Purple. Even though I'm a Jon Lord maniac since the early Whitesnake days I was absolutly satisfied with Don's work. And he wasn't low in the mix at all. To me, the most impressing solos he did were in Hush and Fireball - yes, he's able to be fast on the B3.

You couldn't tell from Ian Gillan's voice that this night was the first show of the tour, but he did OK. Roger did a great bass solo, Paicy his usual drum solo. And Steve - awesome as always.

All in all I found out that they are still worth the money, and apart from getting wet like the people 17 years earlier at Knebworth, the band proved again that they're not finished yet.

Helmut Hammond
